Frequently Asked Questions About Porcelain Veneers
-
Do veneers look natural? Yes! Porcelain veneers are custom-designed to achieve the color, size, and shape of natural teeth. They provide a beautiful and lifelike appearance that both looks natural and improves your smile
-
Does getting veneers hurt? Veneers can be a comfortable process with proper planning and execution, and local anesthetic is used if needed during tooth preparation to ensure a pain-free experience.
-
Can veneers stain or chip? Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, but they can chip if subjected to excessive force. Over years, some recession can occur and staining can develop around the margins. To prevent these issues, avoid biting hard objects, maintain good oral hygiene and keep up with regular dental visits
-
How long do veneers last? With proper care and in the right situation, veneers can last 10 years or more. Regular dental checkups and avoiding or protecting against habits like teeth grinding will help.
-
Are veneers reversible? Veneers require some enamel to be removed from the natural teeth, making the process irreversible. However, they are a long-lasting and transformative solution. For a more minimally invasive option to improve your smile, consider options like teeth whitening or dental bonding. Ask Dr Chenet about what options are best for you.
The Process of Getting Porcelain Veneers
-
Consultation: During the initial visit, Dr Chenet will evaluate your teeth, discusses your goals, and creates a treatment plan tailored to your needs. If needed, a prototype called a mock-up can be done to “try-on” how veneers can improve your smile on your own teeth in the chair. After this trial, the mock up is removed with your teeth unaffected until you are ready to proceed with treatment.
-
Preparation: Using the a mock-up as a guide, the teeth are shaped by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers. This is often times as little as 3/10ths of a millimeter! Impressions or digital scans are taken to make your veneers out of a strong porcelain
-
Temporary Veneers: Temporary veneers are placed while the final ones are being crafted in a dental lab. This allows you to try out the shape, color, and feel of your new smile and along with Dr Chenet’s guidance determine any adjustments that need to be made to ensure a successful final result.
-
Delivery of the Final Product: Once your custom-made porcelain veneers are ready, they are permanently cemented to your teeth using a strong dental adhesive.
-
Protection: It is a good idea to protect your veneers after delivery. Though made of a very strong porcelain, chipping can occur. Protection with a custom made night guard can protect your veneers for many years.
